Robert Lowell's Calling Card
By analyzing a couple of Lowell's poems, one can get a somewhat clear sense of his writing style and prose. Utilizing a dark diction based on religious allusions and connections to themes of darkness, death and corruption, Robert Lowell has a sophisticated yet vampy tone that makes his poetry rich and deep with symbolic underlying meanings that evoke a sense of confusion as well as understanding. It's no wonder how Lowell made a name for himself as a prominent poet of the 20th century, because his poetry set the foundation of modern poetry that cannot be matched by other poets with his distinct style of writing. All the adjectives and verbs are picked with precision and carefulness so as to not waste a single space, and to use each word to its maximum potential. He derives his inspiration from worldly events that often describe simple, everyday phenomenon and adds depth by comparing it other things, mostly Puritan legacies. In conclusion, the seemingly mundane things are transformed into things that require contemplation and thought to understand. It is truly a gift that only Lowell will be able to pull off.
