Robert Lowell was born in 1917 in Boston, and attended Harvard College, where he studied poetry. He graduated in 1940, starting his journey as a prominent poet in the 20th century. He published his first two books in the 1940’s, receiving a Pulitzer Prize at the age of 30. His style consisted of religious elements as well as exploring the dark nature of America’s Puritain legacy. Highly praised his formal and sophisticated tone, Lowell was skilled in dealing with meter and rhyme. Furthermore, he was active politically, making him a well-rounded public figure until his death in 1977.
